LOOKING GOOD

Nutrition and proper skin care are always a major part of a healthy approach to life. Your outward appearance is a reflection of the inside, physically and emotionally. People tend to take better care of their appearance when they feel good about themselves and physically look the way they have always dreamed.

As your appearance changes with weight loss, treating yourself to the pleasures of the Health & Beauty industry can be an important part of acknowledging your accomplishments. Enjoy a manicure, pedicure, facial, or massage, and see the great benefits from adapting wellness to all facets of your life. “Pampering” yourself and taking care of your outer appearance can boost self-confidence for both men and women!

If you are taking the steps to losing weight and being healthy, you owe it to yourself to look and feel your best. The happier you are with yourself, the better your chances are to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Take care of your body on the inside and outside. A specialized nutrition and skin care program can go a long way to not just making you look good, but make you feel good too!

Helpful Hints

Water – Drink 6 to 8 glasses per day for plump, smoother, skin cells.

Vitamin A- Keeps skin soft and supple. Vegetables such as carrots, squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, sweet potatoes, and fruits such as melon, add to your Vitamin A quota.

Understanding The Skin

Epidermis – The true outer barrier, which protects the body. It is composed of dead cells (as are nails and hair) that are continuously shed and replaced by new cells from the layers below. Very few substances pass through the epidermis. It normally contains about ten percent water.

Dermis- This layer acts as a support for the epidermis and contains nerves, blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat, sebaceous (skin lubricant) glands, as well as supportive cellular tissue.

Subcutaneous Tissue – Composed mostly of fat cells. It supplies flexibility to the skin and padding for underlying tissue

How To Slow Down Aging

1. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun. It can weaken elastic fibers and damage the underlying collagen layer of skin. This encourages brown spots, pigment changes, and dark circles under your eyes.

2. Find relief for tension, it will reduce facial stress lines.

3. Be aware of skin aging habits: frowning, squinting and scowling.

4. Smoking causes fine vertical lines about the mouth.

5. Oils and moisturizers induce temporary swelling of the skin so wrinkles appear less noticeable.

6. Try to get as much sleep as your body needs. On average, everyone should sleep about 6-8 hours per night. Lack of sleep shows on your face.

7. Maintain a constant weight –crash diets cause aging due to elasticity loss.

8. Use cotton swabs and a cleanser to wipe away smudges around the eyes. Tissues and paper towels are too coarse and will stretch fragile skin.

9. Avoid extremes in temperature. Turn down heat and turn on the humidifier. A cool moist environment with 50-60% humidity is most comfortable. Super-heated indoor air (like saunas) and chilling winds can promote water loss, leaving skin dry and parched.
